No Sunshine, No Home

It’s your nature, you must go, is what I tell my Canada Goose when summer heat sends him north or winter winds pull him south. I can only kiss his bill before he honks goodbye and flies, because I don’t have the wings to travel the V alongside him. Stuck here in-between, I throw back Grey Goose vodka shots while waiting for him to bring back the warmth, until friends put the bottle away saying he’ll always return, because it’s also in his nature to mate for life. And all I can say is, I know, I know, I know.

“I did everything they told me, but still, I got smaller. And everything hurt, even the sunlight on my skin. I didn’t tell anyone what was going on in inside of me, how lonely it felt to know you were going to die when you were just a colt yourself.”
