When They Find Him

By Andrea Damic

Full Moon beacons above a silhouette hiding in the dark. She welcomes the silence. Ineffable relief. Not even the eerie sounds of owls on their night shift can make her falter. With a newfound determination, she swaddles her trembling hands around a priceless possession of snorts in her arms. The only comfort she’ll ever need. One more night until New Moon swallows the light and she will be long gone.

Neighborhood will speculate about their whereabouts, but over time, she’ll become just another unsolved statistic, battered photograph on the posters around town.

Deep down they’ll know she finally fought back.
